Stand in the Gap

by Amber Ritson

On the 15th of June, for Refugee Week 2026, forRefugees is joining 13 other organisations working with refugees, asylum seekers and people on the move to come together as the Stand in The Gap Coalition.

Across different countries and areas of work, we share one purpose: to help fill the gap between what people on the move need and what systems currently provide. Together, we are launching a two-week collaborative fundraising campaign starting on the 15th of June to raise €75,000 for direct, practical support.

Across Europe and beyond, people who have fled war, persecution, violence and instability are being left without the basic support they need to rebuild their lives. Families are homeless. Children are growing up in uncertainty. People seeking safety struggle daily to access healthcare, legal advice, education, food, housing and community support.

Why €75,000?

Our target is €75,000 because 2026 marks 75 years since the 1951 Refugee Convention - the international agreement setting out the rights of refugees and the responsibilities of states to protect them.

75 years later, those principles matter as much as ever. But protection must mean more than words on paper. It must mean shelter, legal aid, healthcare, food, safety, learning, community and hope.

Before the campaign begins, we’re asking you to help us build momentum: tell others about Stand in The Gap, keep an eye out for our emails during Refugee Week, and think about how you could fundraise, share or take part. During Refugee Week, organisations across the coalition will host online and in-person events. We will share details of talks, gatherings and fundraising activities soon.

Be among the first supporters, and have your donation doubled!

The first £10,000 of the campaign will be matched by a generous supporter. Please help us get there!

What your support made possible last year

In our last campaign, donations helped provide safe housing, legal support, healthcare, food, education, clothing, casework, emergency aid and community support to people on the move across Europe and beyond.

The support was practical and direct:

> Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria provided free legal aid for people held in reception and detention centres

> Northern Lights supported rent and a coordinator stipend, enabling free distribution of clothing, hygiene items and nappies

> ReFOCUS Media Labs paid for electricity and water for its learning space.

Your donations became daily acts of care: somewhere safe to sleep, food, clothing, legal advice, healthcare access, school support, casework and community.

The reality for many refugees and asylum seekers is becoming harder, not easier. People who have already survived displacement, danger and loss continue to face barriers to housing, healthcare, legal protection and basic dignity.

This group of organisations cannot solve every part of this crisis. But together, we can make sure more people are met with humanity instead of abandonment.

This campaign is also about visibility. Public conversation around refugees is increasingly hostile and dehumanising. One of the most powerful things supporters can do is remind others that behind every headline is a human being.

So if you can’t donate, or you’re feeling extra supportive, please share this campaign:

> forward this email to a friend

> share our posts on social media

> talk about Stand In The Gap in your communities

Every donation fills someone’s gap. Every share reaches someone new. Every act of solidarity matters. Please help us fill the gap 🧡
