Teenagers Get Creative with Kaleidoscope in Calais

I never imagined that a simple art session could make me feel safe again. But when Kaleidoscope asked us to think about places that bring us comfort and create an art installation around that idea, something changed. As we sat underneath our creation, reflecting on how it made us feel, we all started to share our hopes for the future. For me and the other boys, education was at the heart of those hopes. One of my friends said, “An education would help me build a future and a career.” We all nodded because we knew it was true. We just want a chance to learn, to grow and to build something better for ourselves.

Kaleidoscope isn’t just about creative projects, it’s about giving us a space where we can feel like ourselves again. Daily life in Calais is hard for us with every day full of uncertainty. But when we come together in these sessions we can focus on something positive. We can create, learn and dream again.

One of the best experiences I’ve had so far with Kaleidoscope was a wood workshop held at Médecins Sans Frontières. We worked in small groups to design and build a board game, using tools like drills, saws and a sanding machine. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but with a little guidance I learned how to shape and smooth the pieces. One of my friends laughed and said, “I’m definitely a perfectionist—I want this board game to look really good!” By the end we were all so proud of what we had made. The best part? We got to keep the game and leave it at MSF’s day centre so we could come back and play anytime.

These moments matter more than I can explain. They remind us that we are more than just people stuck in limbo, we are young men with skills, dreams and ambitions. Kaleidoscope helps us see that and gives us the tools to believe in ourselves again.

Every session, every project, every conversation gives us a small piece of dignity back. And for that, we are grateful.

The work Kaleidoscope does in Calais is vital. These creative and educational projects provide young refugees like me with a sense of purpose, safety and hope.

At forRefugees we’re proud to support Megan and the team at Kaleidoscope so that they can continue to inspire and be there for young teenagers during some of their most difficult times.
