Last night, I had the privilege of attending a truly special Interfaith Iftar at St Olav’s Boys School. Students of Muslim, Christian, Jewish and Hindu faiths came together in the spirit of unity, reflection and generosity.
The theme of the evening was “Home”, a concept that resonates deeply – especially for refugees forced to leave theirs behind. Hosted by the students themselves, the event was an empowering reminder of our shared humanity and the importance of standing together in kindness and respect.
Iftar: A Night of Reflection and Belonging
The evening featured moving contributions from across faiths and perspectives and, of course, the shared act of breaking fast at sun down with all those who had observed that day.
🔹 Muslim students shared the significance of Ramadan, with talented Muslim Balil beautifully performing rap and songs most notably I’m a Traveller on These Lands. Dr. Taha spoke on belonging and community, reminding us that a true home is built through connection and care.
🔹 Christian voices included Headteacher Mr Rees, who spoke about respect, kindness and dignity, and Reverend Bowen who reflected on home as the place we return to for safety, love and belonging.
🔹 The Jewish perspective was represented by Hilary, who posed the question: Is home where you are born, or where you arrive? She also highlighted the role of social justice, equality and peace for all.
🔹 Hindu Students spoke about the importance of uplifting those in need and respecting differences, a core teaching in their tradition.
One particularly moving moment was a student’s poem on inequality, which powerfully captured the challenges faced by those who struggle for a place to call home.
Standing Together for Refugees
As forRefugees was the chosen charity for the evening, Amber spoke about why supporting refugees – many of whom are observing Ramadan right now in very different and difficult circumstances – is so important. And, with the help of a teacher auctioneer and some generous donations of auction prizes, the students did more than just talk – they raised a significant amount for foRefugees!
It was truly inspiring to see young people leading the way in compassion, action and understanding – supported by our dear friend, Asma Meer, who’s son was a former student of St Olaves. This Interfaith Iftar was much more than just a meal together, it was a beautiful expression of hope, unity and the power of community.
🌍✨ One world, together for refugees. ✨🌍
