Finding Hope: A Survivor’s Journey to Safety and Protection

Three people, all wearing masks for safety, are seated around a desk in an office. One person is using a laptop, while the other two are engaged in conversation with her. There is a window with closed shutters behind them. | Support refugees across Europe

Based on true stories, these anonymised first-person accounts, and related images, shine a spotlight on real people’s journeys as refugees and the critical role our partner NGOs have played in their safety and protection in Europe.

When I came to Greece I was with my husband. I hoped for a new beginning, a chance to escape the horrors of my past. Back home in Africa, I had endured years of rape, sexual abuse, and domestic violence. It was the thought of finding safety and protection that kept me going.

We went to the NGO A.Ss.I.S.T. for help with our asylum application. However, from the start, it was clear my husband didn’t want me to speak freely. Our lawyer noticed and separate interviews were arranged. Explaining it was necessary for the asylum process, my husband reluctantly agreed.

In a private meeting, the A.Ss.I.S.T. lawyer, with a translator present, gently explained the asylum procedures and legal framework in Greece. For the first time in a long while I felt safe enough to speak. I confided to the lawyer about the abuse I had endured and my deep fear of my husband. I spoke of my futile attempts to report the abuse to the police back home, and the severe punishments that followed.

Gender-based violence is commonplace in my country and the authorities rarely protect us. The lawyer understood and took immediate action. Our cases were separated, and I was referred to Action for Women. It’s another NGO that helps abused women find safety whilst providing them with psychological support.

Now, I am in a safe place, receiving the help I badly need. My lawyer is preparing me for my asylum interview and will be there to support me throughout the process. Without the legal support and compassion of these two NGOs I would likely still be trapped in a cycle of violence.

Today, thanks to A.Ss.I.S.T. and Action for Women, I am happy and have hope for a future free from fear.
