Mother’s Day Stories of Strength, Hope and Love

Eid Mubarak,

This Sunday is Mother’s Day in the UK and, as we celebrate the incredible mothers in our lives, let’s also take a moment for refugee mothers for their incredible strength, love and hope.

For refugee mothers, the journey is not just about their own survival, but about ensuring a future for their children – often despite unimaginable hardship. Particularly now, as Ramadan comes to an end and Easter approaches, we should hold in our hearts the many refugee families who are struggling, or separated.

A Mother’s Courage

B and her family fled Afghanistan when the Taliban took over, a terrifying journey that could have ended at any moment. But B’s mother was determined to keep her children safe. With strength that only a mother can summon, she carried her family through the most dangerous conditions. Now B has a hopeful future ahead of her. She is safe in Germany, studying, and hopeful – thanks to her mother’s unwavering courage.

A Son’s Love

Haben left Eritrea alone at just 14, forced to make a treacherous journey across borders and seas in search of safety. Through every hardship he encountered from loneliness, hunger and danger, it was thoughts and love for his mum that kept him going. Her love and sacrifices gave him the strength to carry on. He dreams of the day they will be reunited. A mother’s love knows no distance or time.

Grief No Mother Should Ever Know

In Greece, a refugee mum devastatingly lost her three daughters in a single tragedy at sea. They drowned in waters that should have been safe, on a journey that should not have been necessary. These were needless deaths – forced by the lack of safe and documented routes for refugees here in Europe.

This is why we continue to campaign for safe passage and documented routes, because no mother should ever endure such loss.

Let your kindness be the reason someone will get help today.

Happy Mother’s Day, and Eid Mubarak!
