In Serbia with 10 Afghans dancing the Macarena

by Amber Bauer
Two people sit around a campfire at night, Afghans wrapped snugly around their shoulders. Their visible legs and shoes are bathed in the warm glow of embers and vibrant flames, casting flickering shadows that dance across the dark surroundings. | Support refugees across Europe in Greece, France, the UK and the Balkans

The Resilience of Refugees in Serbia

Imagine a cosy fire in a desolate field somewhere near the Serbian -Croatian border with ten young Afghan men, a few volunteers and a Canadian journalist.

Clothes and food had been handed out, and some first aid applied.

Suddenly we were all up singing and dancing the Macarena, followed by learning some Afghan moves!

It was such a special evening. To have so much fun and laughter despite all the stress, sadness and despair these people have to endure as refugees.

It’s not just a bag of clothes , food, or a blanket they need

It’s the warm connection with other human beings who want to spend time with you.

For me, that’s the best part of volunteering 🧡💜.
