Fenix Legal Aid Steps In for Iyad in Greece

by Amber Bauer
Four people from the Fenix Humanitarian Legal Aid team stand outside a container, smiling with enthusiasm, next to a Fenix board displaying information about an upcoming humanitarian legal aid session.

When the team at Fenix Humanitarian Legal Aid first met Iyad his situation broke their heart. Iyad is a 27-year-old man from Morocco. In his home country he’d been a political activist advocating for causes his Government didn’t approve of and he was punished with horrific torture. The trauma left him with severe brain damage and early-onset Alzheimers. His condition makes everyday life a struggle; he can’t always remember where he is and navigating the complex Greek asylum process alone was impossible for him.

During his asylum interview his inability to recall key details was problematic. The Greek asylum service did acknowledge his condition and requested medical tests before continuing his case but, by then, Iyad was completely overwhelmed. He missed appointments, forgot what needed to be done and had no support system to rely on.

The was when our partner Fenix – Humanitarian Legal Aid stepped in. Their team ensured that Iyad received the medical tests he required, they accompanied him to every appointment and advocated tirelessly on his behalf. They also provided consistent reminders and follow-up support to make sure he stayed on track, despite his memory challenges.

It wasn’t just about meeting deadlines, it was about ensuring that Iyad’s voice was heard in a process that seemed designed to overlook people like him. Fenix fought to make sure his rights were upheld and his trauma understood.

Hearing how our partners helped someone as vulnerable as Iyad reminds us why we do this work. His journey showed the immense challenges faced by those fleeing unimaginable circumstances, compounded by conditions that make navigating the asylum process nearly impossible. But it also reminded us of the power of compassion and determination.

With Fenix’s support Iyad’s voice was heard and his rights were upheld. His case moved forward because they took the time to stand with him, to see his humanity, and to fight for his future.

It is our collective kindness, empathy and action that is changing lives every day. By supporting our frontline work – whether through advocacy, donations or spreading awareness – you are part of a movement helping ensure no one is left behind. Together we are providing the care, dignity and hope that everyone deserves because no one should have to face these challenges alone.
